Experiencing Pura Vida: Traveling to Costa Rica

I was looking at all the photos on our fridge the other day and I noticed one from our trip to Costa Rica. My husband and I went when we were still dating to celebrate my birthday. And it was an amazing experience.

Traveling to Costa Rica is a dream for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and travelers looking to slow down and maybe spend some time in a hot spring. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, honeymoon, solo adventure, wellness retreat, or a birthday celebration (as I did) Costa Rica offers unforgettable experiences year-round.

Why Costa Rica Is a Top Travel Destination

Costa Rica is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, home to rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, beaches, and wildlife reserves. Nearly 25% of the country is protected land, making it a global leader in eco-tourism. Travelers can see sloths, monkeys, toucans, sea turtles, and exotic frogs in their natural habitats, often in a single day. And on that note, I would recommend taking a tour with a nature guide because our guide had grown up in the area and was able to point out things we never would have noticed. Such as a tiny green snake hidden among the dappled green of a tree’s leaves.

Another major benefit is the country’s accessibility. Costa Rica is safe, politically stable, and easy to navigate, with modern infrastructure and two international airports. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, making it especially appealing for first-time international travelers.

During our trip, I got sick on one of the days. It was a bummer, both because we were on vacation and because I was on a trip with my boyfriend and I wanted to be cute not ill. But the people around us, the people at our lodge, our tour guide, and others were so kind and helpful (one man even went to go get me some ginger ale from a store) that it remains one of my most pleasant memories of visiting the country.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities in Costa Rica

Adventure travel is one of the biggest reasons people visit Costa Rica. Popular activities include zip-lining through the rainforest, white-water rafting, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and hiking near volcanoes. Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is famous for surfing, while the Caribbean coast offers calmer waters and vibrant culture. Safety tip: If you do engage in any of these activities (we did the zip lining and the volcano hike) please ensure you are with a reputable company and when rafting, choose your correct experience level. Rafting can be dangerous, so you want to ensure you select a course you are comfortable with.

Hiking trails lead to waterfalls, lava fields, and panoramic viewpoints. Many travelers also enjoy natural hot springs, especially near volcanic regions, which provide the perfect way to relax after a day of adventure

Wellness, Sustainability, and the “Pura Vida” Lifestyle

Costa Rica is a leading destination for wellness travel. Yoga retreats, eco-lodges, and sustainable resorts are common throughout the country, often set in jungle or beachfront locations. The national philosophy of pura vida, which means “pure life,” in Spanish, reflects a relaxed, grateful approach to living.

Sustainability is deeply embedded in Costa Rican culture, from renewable energy use to conservation-focused tourism experiences.

Costa Rican Food and Local Culture

Costa Rican cuisine is simple, fresh, and delicious. Staple foods include rice, beans, fresh vegetables, tropical fruits, seafood, and locally grown coffee. Travelers can enjoy meals at local sodas (small eateries) or upscale restaurants.

Final Thoughts on Traveling to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is more than just a vacation destination, it’s a place that encourages travelers to slow down, explore nature, and appreciate life’s simple pleasures. With its diverse landscapes, adventure opportunities, welcoming people, and sustainable mindset, Costa Rica remains a top travel destination for many types of travelers.
